Gaza students lose scholarships after Israel refuses visas

The US state department has withdrawn its Fulbright scholarships from seven Palestinian students from Gaza because they are unable to obtain Israeli permission to leave the small strip of land.

The students were told in a letter from the US consulate general in Jerusalem, dated Thursday and seen by the Guardian, that the state department “will not be able to finalise your Fulbright Student Scholarship for 2008″. No explanation was given, but the students were told to apply again next year, when they would be given “priority consideration” but with no guarantee that the scholarships would be awarded again. USD’s Kluth and Smolczyk Receive NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

Emilie Kluth and Jill Smolczyk of The University of South Dakota women’s swimming and diving team have been awarded postgraduate scholarships by the NCAA. This academic year, three Coyote student-athletes have received the prestigious postgraduate honors. Katie Freeman of the Coyote soccer program also received a postgraduate honor last fall.

Kluth (Sr., Columbus, Neb.) and Smolczyk (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) become the 15th and 16th USD student-athletes since 2000 to receive a NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Since 2004, 12 USD student-athletes have earned postgraduate scholarships ($7,500), including the 2004-05 academic year when five student-athletes received postgraduate scholarships - both rank among the best in the nation. Outstanding students honored with award, scholarships by Women’s Society

The Women’s Society of Washington University honored the legacy of two of the University’s most revered women — Elizabeth Gray Danforth and Harriet K. Switzer — at its annual meeting April 16.

The society presented the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award and two Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarships to three exemplary college students at the Formal Lounge of the Ann Whitney Olin Women’s Building. Read more…

Rotary Club offers $10,000 in camp scholarships

Julie Livingston, president of the Rotary Club of Marblehead, announced that the club is making $10,000 available for Marblehead children who need financial help to attend summer camp. Students in the schools’ METCO program are also eligible.

“It is an opportunity for our organization to ensure that children in town have the possibility of camp experiences, which can be a real part of shaping their lives,” she said. Read more…

MSU Awards Major Scholarships

Several area graduating seniors picked up some big checks today.

Literally.

The students were collecting the first series of awards in Minot State University’s Great Plains Exceptional Scholar program.

Each student was awarded 14-thousand dollars - 35-hundred dollars per year over four years - to attend MSU. Read more…

ProStart Students Given $1.3 Million in Scholarships

National Restaurant Association Solutions announced yesterday the winners of the seventh annual National ProStart Invitational, held April 24-26, 2008 in San Diego, California. Among the field of more than 270 ProStart high school student competitors from 35 states and territories, the teams from Wisconsin and Oregon won top honors in the culinary and management competitions, respectively. The winning students took home medals, prizes, and scholarships, including scholarships from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and The Coca-Cola Company, the premier sponsor of the event.

IDB Scholarships to Help Create Future Leaders

Delegates attending a workshop organized by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in Jeddah yesterday commended the IDB scholarship program and said it would help create future Muslim leaders and play a big role in the development of Muslim communities.

IDB currently provides scholarships to more than 9,000 medical and engineering students in 58 non-member countries. “The workshop was a good opportunity for us to meet with our counterparts in different countries who assist us in implementing the program,” said Dr. Malek Shah Yusoff, head of the scholarship program.
