Rs. 22 crore released to State for student scholarships

The Centre has released a grant of Rs. 22 crore to the State Government for giving merit-cum-means scholarship to students belonging to the minority communities and those pursuing professional and technical courses, Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said.

He was speaking at the distribution of scholarships to 60 students from 32 institutions from across the State, here on Wednesday.

Mr. Thakur lauded the State Government for launching the scheme introduced by the Centre.

The Centre had set apart Rs. 6.4 lakh for establishing an Information Technology-enabled dedicated cell to monitor the number of such students in the State and their requirements. It had also announced a post-matriculation scholarship for minority students, Mr. Thakur said.

The Governor asked Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao, who was present at the function, to take the initiative to implement the post-matriculation scholarship scheme before the end of the current financial year.

Nisha D`Souza, Shereen, Divya Diana, Shaheen Fatima, Donna Belle James, Tasmia Tabassum, Tahsin Fatima, Amina Firdous and Shahina Khan, doing engineering and postgraduate courses, were happy that the scholarship would take care of their expenses, including hostel fee and spending on books.

Most of the students said that it would reduce the burden on their parents, particularly since the fee was being increased every year.

I.R. Perumal, Secretary, Department of Minorities welcomed the gathering.
